how to get started in the stunt industry

One of the most common questions people ask when we meet them is how they can get into Stunt Performance and Action Acting?  The answer is to do it properly and attend a leading stunt school, gain your certificates and qualifications, and learn about the industry before you try to make your name. In this article we share some good tips and advice that should help you start a career in Stunt Acting.
Stunt Acting is an exciting and challenging career path that requires a unique combination of athleticism, creativity, and technical skills. Whether you aspire to be a movie stunt double, a live-action performer, or a stage combat artist, there are several steps you can take to get started in the world of stunt acting. Here are some tips and advice to help you pursue your dream.

  1. Build your physical fitness and skills
Stunt actors must be in excellent physical condition, with a strong core, good balance, and overall strength. Start by engaging in a regular workout routine that includes cardio, strength training, and flexibility exercises. Consider taking martial arts classes, gymnastics, or parkour to improve your agility and coordination. Practice basic tumbling and acrobatic movements such as rolls, flips, and falls. It's also important to develop your stamina and endurance as many stunt scenes can require long hours of physical exertion.

  2. Get proper training
Stunt work is highly specialized and requires specialized training. Consider enrolling in an accredited stunt school or training program, where you can learn techniques like high falls, wire work, and fight choreography from experienced professionals. Accredited Stunt Schools, like The International Stunt Academy, are government-backed and provide education and training to the highest educational standards in Europe. The International Stunt Academy offers courses that cover a wide range of stunt skills, including high falls, wire work, car chases, and fire burns. Graduates of the school receive certifications and qualifications that are recognized by industry professionals and can help them to secure jobs as stunt actors. Additionally, as an international school with industry-leading teachers and instructors, students start to network globally before they even graduate.

  3. Network and make connections
Like many careers in the entertainment industry, getting into stunt acting often requires connections and networking. Attending industry events, workshops, and conventions where you can meet industry professionals and make connections is essential. Build relationships with stunt coordinators, producers, and casting directors, and let them know about your skills and experience. Consider joining a stunt performer union or guild, such as the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) or the Stuntmen's Association of Motion Pictures, which can provide you with access to job opportunities and industry resources. The International Stunt Academy can also provide networking opportunities and connections to industry professionals through their alumni network and guest instructors.

  4. Obtain the right certifications and qualifications
Obtaining the proper certifications and qualifications is an important aspect of becoming a successful stunt actor. Many productions require proof of qualifications before hiring a performer for a stunt role. A fully accredited stunt school, such as The International Stunt Academy, can provide you with the training and qualifications necessary to show that you are a qualified performer.

Because The International Stunt Academy is government-backed you are assured that the educational programme and training are delivered to the highest academic standards in Europe. Accreditation by government agencies ensures that the school meets strict standards for curriculum, facilities, and instructors.

  5. Create a demo reel and a dedicated social profile
A stunt actor's reel or portfolio is an essential tool for showcasing their skills and experience to potential employers. Create a demo reel that includes footage of you performing various stunts, such as falls, car chases, or fight scenes. Include a variety of shots that showcase your range of abilities, as well as any unique skills or specialties you have. If you're just starting out and don't have a lot of footage, consider filming your own stunts to create a demo reel.

  6. Be willing to start small
Breaking into stunt acting can be challenging, and it's rare to land a major role or gig right away. Be willing to start small and take on smaller gigs, such as background or extra work, to gain experience and build your reputation. Volunteer for local theater productions or independent films to gain exposure and build your skills. Consider joining a stunt team or troupe, where you can collaborate with other performers and gain experience working on live performances.

Becoming a stunt actor requires a lot of hard work, dedication, and perseverance. Focus on developing your physical skills, getting proper training, and building your network and connections in the industry. Attend an accredited stunt school like The International Stunt Academy to obtain the necessary training and qualifications to demonstrate your skills and abilities
