In an industry that has often been male-dominant, the role of women in stunt acting, and many of the greats, are topics that are too easily overlooked. However, throughout the history of cinema, there have been many female pioneers who challenged the status quo, pushing the boundaries of what was possible and paving the way for future generations of female stunt performers.

The International Stunt Academy proudly supports and champions women in stunts and action acting, through our own campaign (Women in Action) and by providing tailored training and resources to help young women forge successful careers in this thrilling field. In this feature article, we celebrate the early heroes of female stunt acting, exploring their impact on the industry and the opportunities available for women in stunts today.

The Trailblazers:
The early pioneers of female stunt acting defied expectations and fearlessly tackled daring stunts, demonstrating that women were just as capable as their male counterparts. A few of the most notable trailblazers include:

1. Pearl White (1889-1938) - Pearl White was a silent film actress known for performing her own stunts in the popular serial "The Perils of Pauline" (1914). She continued to perform stunts throughout her career, solidifying her status as a pioneering stuntwoman.
2. Helen Gibson (1892-1977) - Known as the first professional stuntwoman, Helen Gibson performed daring stunts in silent films and later in Hollywood talkies. She started her career in 1910 and quickly gained fame for her work in the popular series "The Hazards of Helen."
3. Grace Cunard (1893-1967) - Another silent film actress, Grace Cunard starred in various serials and performed her own stunts. She worked as a writer, director, and producer as well, making her a trailblazer in the industry.
4. Mary Wiggins (1903-1983) - A talented stunt performer and actress, Mary Wiggins was known for her work in Westerns during the 1920s and 1930s. She performed horseback stunts, high falls, and car stunts, earning the nickname "Queen of the Cowgirls."
5. Marion Webb (1904-1992) - Marion Webb was a skilled motorcyclist and stunt performer who specialized in motorcycle stunts during the 1920s and 1930s. She was known for her fearless approach and ability to perform stunts that many of her male counterparts would not attempt.
6. Polly Burson (1914-1999) - Polly Burson was an accomplished stuntwoman who worked in Hollywood from the 1930s to the 1950s. She performed various stunts in films, including high falls, fight scenes, and horseback stunts, and was one of the first women to perform a full-body burn.
7. Julie Ann Johnson (b. 1938) - A trailblazing stuntwoman and coordinator, Julie Ann Johnson has been in the business since the 1960s. She performed stunts in popular television series such as "Charlie's Angels" and "The Rockford Files."
8. Jeannie Epper (b. 1941) - With a career spanning over five decades, Jeannie Epper has been a stunt double for stars like Lynda Carter and Lindsay Wagner. Epper's career began in the 1960s, and she went on to become one of the most sought-after stuntwomen in Hollywood.
9. Kitty O'Neil (1946-2018) - A deaf stuntwoman and racer, Kitty O'Neil broke numerous world records for speed, including the women's land-speed record in 1976. She performed stunts in TV shows like "Wonder Woman" and "The Bionic Woman" and worked as a stunt double for actress Lynda Carter.
10. Donna Evans (b. 1945) - A pioneer in the world of high-speed car stunts, Donna Evans began her career in the late 1960s and quickly gained notoriety for her precision driving and fearless approach to stunts. She has worked on numerous films and television shows, including "The Blues Brothers" and "Knight Rider."
11. Tracey Knievel (b. 1961) - Daughter of famous stunt performer Evel Knievel, Tracey Knievel followed in her father's footsteps and performed daredevil stunts throughout the 1970s and 1980s.
12. Gloria Gilbert (b. 1950) - Starting her career in the 1970s, Gloria Gilbert became known for her work in martial arts films and television shows. As one of the first women to specialize in martial arts stunts, she paved the way for future generations of female stunt performers in this niche.
13. Denise Lynne Roberts (b. 1952) - A versatile stunt performer, Denise Lynne Roberts has been involved in the industry since the early 1970s. Known for her work in both film and television, Roberts has performed a wide range of stunts, from high falls to complex fight scenes, and has been a trailblazer for women in the stunt community.
