Don't try this at home kids (but if you do...)

The truth is, even though everyone will say stunts should only be performed by trained professionals, all stunt performers probably had a go before they knew what they were doing. This article isn't advising you ever try a stunt, but if you do feel tempted to mess around and don't want to learn the hard way, this is worth a read...
Safety is of utmost importance when performing stunts, regardless of whether it's a professional performance or just for fun. A well-executed stunt requires careful planning, preparation, and execution to minimize the risk of injury. In this article, we will discuss the key steps to take when assessing safety when performing a stunt.

  1. Determine the level of difficulty:
Stunts are classified into different categories based on their level of difficulty. A beginner stunt, for example, may be less complex than an advanced stunt. It's important to accurately assess the level of difficulty of the stunt and determine if you are capable of performing it safely.
  2. Assess the environment:
Before performing a stunt, assess the environment for any potential hazards that may pose a threat to your safety. Consider factors such as the surface you will be performing on, the height of the stunt, and any obstacles that may be in the way.
  3. Wear appropriate gear:
Safety gear such as helmets, padding, and gloves should be worn when performing a stunt. This will provide extra protection in the event of a fall or accident. Additionally, ensure that the gear is in good condition and fits properly.
  4. Plan the stunt in detail:
Before attempting a stunt, plan it out in detail and make any necessary adjustments to ensure it is safe to perform. This includes determining the right approach, exit strategy, and fall-back plan in the event of an emergency.
  5. Practice and rehearse:
Practice the stunt several times in a controlled environment before attempting it in a real-world scenario. This will help you identify any potential issues and make necessary adjustments.
  6. Consider having a spotter:
A spotter is someone who assists you during the stunt and ensures your safety. They can help you maintain balance, provide support, and intervene in case of an emergency.
  7. Seek professional training:
If you are inexperienced or new to performing stunts, consider seeking professional training. A qualified instructor can teach you the correct techniques and provide you with guidance on how to perform stunts safely.

Too often we see people become over-excited or lose focus when the adrenaline kicks in, and it is these moments, or when we are mentally tired, that the hazards and risk of injury increase.  That's why we teach people to slow down, increase awareness and ensure the right standards and protocols are followed at all times.

Performing stunts can be exciting and challenging, but it is important to prioritize safety at all times. By following the steps outlined above, you can help minimize the risk of injury and ensure a safe and successful stunt. Remember, safety should always come first.
