5 top tips from film students to help you create better films

We run regular 'film weeks' and encourage all our students to explore and understand, even at a basic level, the roles of the people who will work around them. Until you've handled cameras, worked with sound or had to spend time perfecting lighting, you just cannot appreciate the complimentary crafts that operate around you on a set.  Recently we hosted students from a Film School and we asked them to share their 5 top tips that could help anyone create a better outcome when making a student film. Here's what they had to say...

  1. Start with a strong concept: Before you start filming, it is crucial to have a clear and concise idea of what your film will be about. This will ensure that your film has a strong narrative and a well-defined purpose.
  2. Plan ahead: Make sure to plan your shots, lighting, and sound in advance. This will help you stay on track during filming and reduce the need for reshoots. Planning ahead will also save you time and money in post-production.
  3. Invest in quality equipment: While you don’t need the most expensive gear to make a good film, investing in quality equipment will improve the overall look and feel of your film. Consider renting equipment if you can’t afford to purchase it outright.
  4. Collaborate with others: Working with a team of passionate filmmakers can help you bring your vision to life. Collaborating with others can also provide you with new ideas and perspectives, and help you improve your own skills.
  5. Practice, practice, practice: Making films is a process, and the more you practice, the better you will become. Consider working on short films or other projects to refine your skills and develop your own style. Also, watch films, read books, and attend workshops to learn from others and stay up-to-date on the latest filmmaking techniques.
Making films as a student / newbie can seem a challenging but as you get into it you realise its not so hard to learn, because the lessons come fast and often. Its also a very rewarding experience to see your final cut on screen and gain the positive reactions and feedback from other performers and film-makers.

By following these tips, you can improve your skills, create high-quality films, and start to build the foundations for your future in the film industry.
